R.A.T.S. Sample Script Pages from Issue #1

PAGE EIGHTEEN (7 panels)

Panel 1: Carrie drops onto the roof of the unmarked building from the map.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Jeez, that’s an ab killer. I really need to get in better shape for this sort of shit. Now let’s see what the security is like inside…

Panel 2: Carrie stands near the corner of the building, where there are power lines leading into it, electrical boxes, and a satellite dish. She has one box pried open, and has her holo-laptop out, scanning the building’s security systems.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

That’s what I figured this place has to be the mother load. Security on entrances is top grade, laser intrusion and even sound sensors. Tricky, but I can have it shut off in minutes.

Panel 3: Interior of a posh executive office. The desktop is virtually empty, but a holo-monitor like Carries’ has just snapped on. A single alert light flashes on the monitor.  The desk chair faces away from the desk.

Panel 4: The desk chair has swiveled around, there’s a man sitting in it, his face in shadows.  He wears a white vest, dark shirt, and white tie, with no suit jacket.  His hands are outstretched, and a holo-keyboard has appeared under his fingertips. There is a large Y shaped scar along the back of his left hand, almost like a burn or a brand.

SHADOWED MAN:

Dial Section B security, please.

Panel 5: from over the SHADOWED MAN’s shoulder, showing the screen, with two images of Carrie from opposite angles, using her own holo-laptop on the rooftop.  The scar on the Shadowed Man’s hand is more clearly visible.

SECURITY CHIEF (OP, speaker phone):

Section B, Commander Walker here, Sir.

SHADOWED MAN:

Commander, we have an intrusion in Section B, on the roof. I don’t know why you and your men aren’t already aware of it, and I don’t care.  Please form an armed detail, but keep your distance for the moment.

Panel 6: Closer shot of the monitor, Carrie face in her hoodie is more clearly visible.

SECURITY CHIEF (OP, speaker phone): Right away, Sir. Do you want her alive, Sir?

SHADOWED MAN: (OP, only his monitor is visible in this panel):

I want to see what sort of milk our little cat burglar is sniffing around for, but don’t worry commander. Once my curiosity is satisfied…

Panel 7: Carrie has the rooftop access door opened, and is entering the building.

SHADOWED MAN (CAP): … you may KILL the Cat.

PAGE NINETEEN (5 panels)

Panel 1: Carrie skulks into the large darkened lab, marveling at its size and sophistication.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Wow, this really is the mother lode. I don’t recognize half of this tech, these guys are a LOT more than a server farm.

Panel 2: Carrie is at a stand up desk with a monitor system, hacking and stealing files again. Her eyes are wide, a shocked expression on her face.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

I don’t understand this at all.  I can access all the software, but the specs for some of these advancements are insane! These guys aren’t a generation ahead of the competition, it’s more like 3 or 4. Amazing! And … what the HELL?!?

Panel 3: Carrie is staring at a screen with a tech spec layout of her holo-laptop, labeled PARTICLE ACCESS INTERFACE.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

This is my holo-laptop?!?? But I stole this from a tech company in Brazil almost a year ago. Did these guys steal it, or are these companies connected somehow?

Panel 4: Carrie is seen in front of the workstation, as the lights suddenly snap on all over the building!

SECURITY CHIEF:

SECURITY TEAM, MOVE IN!

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

OH, FUCK ME!!

Panel 5: Large full page-width panel. Carrie on the far left, ducking behind the workstation as she quickly disconnects her gear.  The armed security team is moving in from the far right.  They are dressed in dark colored tactical gear, not the uniforms of the security team Carrie was pretending to be a part of earlier.

SECURITY CHIEF:

Section B Squad, FAN OUT. TERMINATE Subject with EXTREME PREJUDICE!

PAGE TWENTY (5 panels)

Panel 1: Full-page width, Carrie runs crouched down from her spot towards an exit door as the men in the security detail open fire on her.

Panel 2: Carrie slams open the door with a grunt as bullets whiz through the open door over her head.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

WHO the FUCK are these guys?!? They are NOT the regular security team.  I have seriously stepped in it this time…

Panel 3: Carrie slams the door behind her, quickly jamming a plastic card with a cord attached to her laptop module, stuck on her belt.  The display appears right before her.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Gotta scramble the security locks in the building so no one has access but me.  With these guys heavy artillery, it won’t stop them, but should slow them down enough to buy me some time.

Panel 4: Overhead view of the small room Carrie is in, the wall between Carrie and her pursuers, and the armed patrol slowly advancing toward the locked door.  This gives the impression that they are moving slowly and methodically, like soldiers, not running full out as Carrie has been doing.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Looks like limited access on the ground, too many tight spaces to get trapped in.  Helipad on the roof means this is the tallest building around, might be able to get to another building. Shitty options either way…

Panel 5: Again full page width, Carrie is running down a long hallway as the door she locked previously is seen in the background, exploding inwards.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Damn that was fast, this is getting out of control. Why are these guys so pissed over some SOFTWARE?!?

PAGE TWENTY-ONE ( 7 panels)

Panel 1: Carrie turns a corner and reaches a door with a sign that says, “TAK TILGANG”, and reads the sign rapidly.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

“Roof Access.” Bingo!

Panel 2: Carrie turns her head, and sees a sign on a door directly across the hall that says, “EXIT”

Panel 3: Carrie kicks open the exit door and leaves it open.

Panel 4: Carrie has gone through the roof access door and is heading up the stairs.

CARRIE COULTON:

That exit door trick won’t fool them, but they’ll have to be prudent and send at least a few guys that way, which means fewer bullets flying at my damned head!

Panel 5: A door at one landing of the staircase opens as Carrie is coming up, and an armed security guard, alone, advances through it, gun raised. He’s dressed like the men downstairs, but his facemask is pulled down.  He looks surprised to see her.

GUARD: (speaking Norwegian):

Oh shit … it’s…

Panel 6: Carrie sees he’s caught off guard and slams her elbow into his groin. He falls, dropping his pistol.

Panel 7: Carrie grabs the gun, pointing it at him shakily.

CARRIE COULTON: (speaking Norwegian)

GET ON THE FUCKING GROUND! BACK, THROUGH THE DOOR!

PAGE TWENTY-TWO (7 panels)

Panel 1: Carrie’s hand is visible, shaking with the gun in it pointed at the guard’s face.

GUARD:

The American girl who was good with her tongue!!

Panel 2: very small panel, Carrie’s face turns to anger.

Panel 3: Carrie smashes the butt of the pistol hard onto the mans nose, breaking it and knocking him out cold.

Panel 4: The guard lies face down with blood flowing out of his head.  Carrie drops the pistol and runs up the stairs:

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Asshole, you have no idea…

Panel 5: Carrie reaches the top of the stairs, and finds another door marked “tak” roof in Norwegian.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Ok, here’s the roof, now what?

Panel 6: Carrie rushes out the roof access door, and is surprised to see a helicopter on the roof.  She rushes past a man she doesn’t see, standing behind the door in shadow.  He has his hand raised, with something long in it, like knife or a needle.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

What the hell? Whose Chopper?!?

Panel 7: Carrie sentence is cut off as the man steps forward and jams the needle he’s holding into her neck.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

There was nothing in the security log about a heli–

PAGE TWENTY-THREE (5 panels)

Panel 1: Full page wide panel. Carrie falls on her knees, her head in her right hand, her left hand is supporting her.  We can see the boots of the man who injected her, walking around her towards the helicopter.

CARRIE COULTON (THOUGHT):

Christ, was that a needle?!? Motherfucker … head feels woozy…

Panel 2: the word balloons here would have a special color around them (I was thinking purple) to indicate they are now internal thoughts that Carrie is “hearing”.

ALEX (PURPLE TELEPATHY BUBBLE) (this one will sort of fade in, as is spoken softly at first, then reaching full volume):

…should feel a little dizzy, but it will pass. Let me know when you can hear me.

Panel 3: from over Alex’s shoulder, we still haven’t seen his face.  Carrie looks up at him from her knees.  Her right hand has now balled into a fist.

CARRIE COULTON:

What did you shoot me up with, god dammit?!? And how the Hell…

Panel 4: Carrie lunges upward at Alex, throwing a punch at him with her right hand., which he easily avoids by grabbing her wrist.

CARRIE COULTON:

…are you in My HEAD?!?! Ow!!!

Panel 5: Carrie grunts as Alex tosses her past him, onto the ground.

ALEX (PURPLE TELEPATHY BUBBLE):

Easy Miss Coulton. Believe it or not, I’m here to help you. And try not to speak out loud.

PAGE TWENTY-FOUR (2 panels)

Panel 1: Carrie looks up from the ground again, as surprise registers on her face.  She’s now “communicating” by thought as well.

CARRIE COULTON (her telepathy bubble outline will be blue):

Who are … ? YOU!!! Tall, Dark and Following ME!!

ALEX: (PTB, OP):

Nice nickname, but my friends…

Panel 2: Fills the rest of the page.  We see Alex fully for the first time from over Carries shoulder, looking up.  He’s wearing black tactical gear, but more modern looking than the SWAT guys chasing Carrie, or even Carrie’s own gear. He’s got his hand held out to her, as if to help her up.

ALEX (PTB):

… call me WILDCARD!

ALEX (PTB) NEW BUBBLE :

Trust me, Miss Coulton, I’ve been waiting to say this for a long time:

TEAGUE (his telepathy bubble outline will be red):

Aww, crap, don’t say it Wildcard…

ALEX (PTB, quietly, almost as an aside):

Oh, I’m saying it, Majesty…

ALEX (PTB, LOUDER):

COME WITH ME IF YOU WANT TO LIVE!

TEAGUE: (RTB) (OP) … shit, he said it.
